What is Local Exhaust Ventilation?

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) is an engineering control system that reduces exposure to airborne contaminants such as dust, mist, fumes, vapour, or gas in a workplace. LEV systems are designed to control exposure to Substances Hazardous to Health. We aim to assist our clients in offering the best possible protection from these hazardous substances and provide responsible LEV Testing for a range of systems, designed to keep you and your workforce safe.

If you require professional LEV testing at affordable prices, contact us for a FREE quote today!

So, what exactly is LEV Testing?

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH) requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to their employee’s health. This means if you use local exhaust ventilation to control exposure, it needs regular checking and thorough examination and testing at least once every 14 months or at more frequent intervals if you are using it with one of the processes listed in Schedule 4 of COSHH. LEV Testing is often carried out in woodworking workshops, welders workshops, mechanic’s workshops, schools and more. In fact, if any of your machines have the following components then you will require an LEV test:

  • Hood
  • Ducting
  • Air Cleaner or Arrestor
  • Air Mover
  • Discharge

If you’re unsure whether you need LEV Testing, please don’t hesitate to speak to our specialists today. We have the experience to answer any questions and make trusted recommendations.

What does LEV Testing involve?

HSE defines LEV Testing as a thorough and systematic examination to make sure that the LEV can continue to perform as intended by design and will contribute to the adequate control of exposure. We follow a detailed procedure when performing LEV Tests and we will:

  • Check your filters to see what condition they are in.
  • Measure the rotational speed of the motor with a tachometer (if required)
  • Take velocity pressure and static pressure of all test points on the system and face velocities at open hoods.
  • Record the pressure drops across the filters.
  • Measure ambient dust level.
  • Measure contaminant in the returned air to the workshop.
  • Measure the decibel readings between 2-3 meters of each machine.
  • Measure the dust level reading in the breathing zone of employees (dependent on the process)
  • Carry out a smoke test (dependent on the process)
  • Complete a face velocity test.
  • Provide you with an LEV report that complies with the legal requirements from both COSHH and HSE.

Following your LEV test, we can assist in the design, alteration and improvement of all LEV systems if needed. Any required or possible improvements will be listed in order of priority, under Report Findings & Prioritised Action Plan.

What happens if I need improvements to my LEV system?

If improvements are required, whether Essential or Recommended, we will supply a FREE quotation for bringing the system back up to its original performance. Any improvements will be carried out to the highest standard by our skilled and experienced engineers.

How often does LEV Testing need to be done?

We recommend having your LEV system tested at least every 14 months. What’s more, when you choose us for your LEV Testing, we won’t tie you into a lengthy contract. If you like us, you will hopefully return. With a 30-day account, if you pay within 30 days, we will fix the price for next year’s test. So you won’t face any hidden costs or nasty surprises next year.

LEV Commissioning Test

What is an LEV Commissioning Test?

In addition to LEV Testing, we also undertake LEV Commissioning Testing. This type of test is carried out once new equipment has been installed. This is done to make sure that everything is in working order and meets current regulations set out by COSHH.

Personal Sampling Test

What is personal sampling?

Many industrial and construction sites pose a potential risk to their employee’s health. Breathing in dangerous substances can lead to long-term health issues and illnesses, therefore, a personal sampling test may be needed. This type of test collects details on what employees are breathing in.
